Jonathan Cappelli

If I had to point to a single moment where my interest in this work began, it likely started in childhood when an oil company began a fracking operation in our neighborhood in rural CO–-resulting in a pipeline being laid across our property, a tower being constructed across the road near our neighbors house, and (likely) the wells we depended on for water running dry. As I grew older and became exposed to injustice in other parts of the world, I began to see that in many ways the built environment is essentially a language written in steel and concrete script, memorializing any given society’s economic, social, and environmental policies (whether express or implicit).

Since that realization, my work and experience in affordable housing, urban planning, sustainability, and community organizing have all sought to reimagine the societal narrative we spell out through the built environment by identifying  or developing ways to conserve natural systems and improve human ones; and I’m honored to continue working towards those ends with my fellow colleagues at Cappelli Consulting.

Growing up in San Francisco, I was fully immersed in city life. I absolutely love knowing the city like the back of my hand and being able to call it home. Unfortunately, I also witnessed a change in the housing landscape of San Francisco, which forced out many people who grew up there. I wanted to better understand how cities are formed and transformed to learn about solutions that address root causes. This led me to get my Bachelor’s in City and Regional Planning.

Post graduation, I ended up in Leadville, Colorado. This change to living in a small town wasn’t easy, but I dove in, created a new community, and came to love it. It exposed me to the nuances and unique challenges of rural planning, especially as it pertains to housing. I was beyond inspired by the leaders working to solve these issues. I decided to join them and continue the work of finding ways to remove the barriers to accessing and remaining in a safe and healthy place to call home.
